I went to an amazing beer festival in San Pedro last weekend, so I’ve been thinking non-stop about beer and one of my all time fave bands: The Minutemen. When I was in high school and listening to WAY TOO MUCH minutemen, I worked in a Mexican restaurant and even though I was underage, I illegally served lots and lots of Corona. These days people are trying new things, like this tasty brown ale is from Golden Road. It’s incredible and made in LA, not too far from Pedro. And if you haven’t heard, cans are back in a big way. For this, you get two songs: one, most people have heard because of MTV’s “Jackass” and the other because if you listen carefully, it might just change your life like it has for so many others.
Oud Bruin
There’s a joke in #Singles about struggling bands that say they’re big in Belgium. I used to promote a band that really was: Portland’s hardcore heroes known as Poison Idea. They had a small but rabid following here, and just like Belgian sour ale, a huge fan base in Europe. And like punk rock eventually did, the style is gaining momentum with the masses. This one is called Oud Bruin and it’s made by VanderGhinste. It’s tart, refreshing, and eminently memorable, just like good punk rock. Follow this link for one of the best covers of all time.
Timothy Taylor's Landlord Pale Ale
Thanks to a reminder from @sneakoutmusic, I’ve been watching #peakyblinders virtually nonstop. Sadly I couldn’t get any authentic “Made in Birmingham” beer, but this spectacular ale from Timothy Taylor has long been one of my faves, and could be similar to what they drank in England between the wars. The music in the show is shockingly good…I’ve always loved this one from Flat Duo Jets and I’m convinced it would fit the show like a glove.
London Pride
Here in LA, we’re spoiled by beautiful sunsets almost every night, and a particularly gorgeous evening always makes me think of the best sunset song ever: “Waterloo Sunset” by the quintessential English band, London’s The Kinks. There’s no better London beverage than an imperial pint of Fuller’s London Pride, served here in a classic nonic glass. Cheers!
